Health Professionals
Referrals are welcomed for the following:
Clinical psychology for adults (18 years and over)
For conventional psychological therapy. In some cases, elements of biofeedback or neurotherapy may be incorporated to enhance therapeutic outcomes. Referrals are accepted under the following schemes:
- Medicare (this can include referrals for insomnia as the primary mental health disorder under Better Access – see Psychological Therapies for CBTi info)
- Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA)
- Workers’ Compensation (case by case basis)
- NDIS (plan managed/self managed)
Neurofeedback therapy (adults & young people)
Neurofeedback therapy is generally funded privately if treatment is comprised of stand-alone neurofeedback. As such, a referral is not required, but is welcomed. Neurofeedback is suited to people who:
- don’t wish to engage with traditional approaches, or haven’t responded adequately to such approaches
- experience chronic central and/or autonomic nervous system dysreguation (e.g., anxiety, sleep difficulties, trauma)
- prefer not to take medication for mental health difficulties, or have not benefited from medication
- would like to improve self-regulation for enhanced performance (e.g., peak performers, CEOs), or anyone wanting to optimise brain function.
QEEG assessments & reports (adults & young people):
Generally privately funded. Assessments are based on 19 channel resting state electroencepalography recordings (rsEEG), with 10 mins eyes open, 10 mins eyes closed. The raw EEG is analysed, followed by a quantitative analysis (QEEG) which includes comparison with a large age/sex matched reference database. QEEGs can be helpful for:
- Tracking changes in brain function over time – improvement, decline or stabilisation (e.g., head injuries including concussion; COVID infections/long COVID; or cognitive decline/suspected dementia)
- Assisting accurate diagnosis of mental health disorders (e.g., helping to differentiate between ADHD and anxiety, or ADHD and poor sleep – this is based on the client’s EEG, comparison with a large QEEG reference database, and established disorder related EEG patterns/phenotypes)
- Predicting and tracking medication response on the basis of the client’s EEG features/neuromarkers and published research (the growing fields of personalised medicine and pharmaco-EEG). For example, predicting response to antidepressant medication (click here for a related 2023 publication in Nature Mental Health).
- Informing a personalised neurofeedback training program or for determining optimal use of neuromodulation techniques (e.g., decisions regarding location and pulsing rate for transcranial photobiomodulation)
- or to better understand how a person’s cognition, emotions, perceptions, and behaviour are related to their individual underlying brain activity.
